JHB Review 16 August Hunt

Wow, a lot of new people today! The season is drawing to a close, so it is quite surprising to see new faces every week. I hope they will all be back next year (our hunts run only in the winter months… April to September when it is cooler for the dogs).

Quite a bit of action and drama this week. We had Roti jumping over a small gorge, realising in mid air that it might not have been the *best* way to go. I missed his acrobatics, but he apparently turned sideways in mid-air and landed rather spectacularly. (I think Roti was trying to emulate the pictures on his pyjamas racing silks! Then we had Harry try and escape from Peter at the start line – Peter put up a great tackle and grabbed onto said beagle, being dragged face first into the dust. At this point, there were desperate pleading glances to Trevor to PLEASE blow the whistle so we could all release the dogs before Harry completely escaped and got disqualified. Whistle blown, Harry released, Peter about to get up… and was run over by Matilda and Bart. Trevor came to check it all out, and promptly stood on Bart! Sheesh!

On each run we had a dog or two take the scenic route, and we sent our search party to retrieve them without too much hassle. Annie and Avon seem to be making a habit out of this!  One of the new dogs, Rocky, also went on a walkabout – I think he got a bit scared and tried to head back to the cars.

Maya is continuing to race ahead of the pack and finish in first place. She really is the talk of BeagleTown!

Our last line is always back to the cars, and the last little stretch is through very long grass, which makes it difficult to see where the beagles are.  After the last line, we all got our beagles and got ready to leave. But Copper‘s mom and dad couldn’t find Copper. Again, the trusty search party spread themselves across the veld to find the missing boy. The searched for ages… only to find out that Copper was hanging around the cars all along! Shame, poor mom and dad must have been so stressed out!! They were reunited and everyone was very relieved!

Thanks to everyone involved in the organising of the mornings. Thanks to Dana & Jane for doing all the admin, registration and bib-issuing… Shaw and Raymond (& others) for walking the lines and Trevor for being official whistle blower at the starts. These great mornings are only possible because of our volunteers! – Thanks guys!!

There are only very few hunts left (see our EVENTS page for the dates). Our next hunt is on the 30th August at 8am. We will be having a social get together afterwards (either a breakfast or boerewors rolls) … I will send out a reminder email and an RSVP – so we can get numbers for catering purposes… if you want to come to this event PLEASE email me, to let me know how many people to expect.

Until then,

Happy Beagling!
