The dates for 2012 Gauteng hunts have been set!

Please take note of the below dates… we will start at 7am sharp … but we ALL need to be there BEFORE 7am so that we are ready to go at 7am. Remember, the sooner we start, the sooner we can go home for that glorious nap!

If it is your first time, please ensure you are at the hunt venue at least 20-30 minutes before (ie 6:30am!) to signup, get a temporary bib for your beagle/s and let your beagle/s have a look and sniff around for a bit before you expect them to run off with a pack they don’t know.

We are looking forward to another awesome year of hunting!

    Hi there,

We plan to attend our first hunt on 01 April. I just have some questions please:
    1. Location
    2. Fees
    3. Rules/Guidelines (for owners and dogs)
    4. Fitness requirement etc (I.e. what happens if dog loses scent or is tired – how do they get “home”)

William – to answer your questions:

    1. Location: near the Zwartkops racetrack out Centurion/Erasmia way

    2. Fees: to be confirmed, but between R200 – R250 per family I would estimate

    3. Rules/Guidelines (for owners and dogs): see

    4. Fitness requirement etc (I.e. what happens if dog loses scent or is tired – how do they get “home”): we lay 5 lines of between 700m – 1km per day, so the dogs who complete all 5 lines run a minimum of about 3-4km on a morning. No all the beagles run, some may stay behind with the group of people, or some may only run some of the lines. New beagles generally take a few weeks to get into the swing of things, and won’t complete all the lines on their first time (we have had it happen, but it is very rare!). If you are concerned about your dogs fitness (or even weight) I would suggest starting with walks now, especially if the dog is overweight, as there is a fair amount of walking involved at the hunts, even for thios dogs who don’t run the lines.
If a dog decides halfway through the line they would rather return to their people, they very often walk back on the line and meet up with us… or they make their way to the parking area as they know this is a “safe place” … when we do “misplace” a beagle, we have a very dedicated “search & recue” team who take to the area and retrieve the “lost” hound.
